Hardibacker or concrete board?

My parents are defying the housing bubble and building a beach house on the gulf coast of FL. They were told by a tile guy that you should not use hardibacker because it will cause cracks in houses that aren't sitting on a concrete slab. He suggested using concrete board. Our tile guy used hardibacker for our tile (which has a full basement so no concrete slab underneath) and it looks perfect so far after 6 months. Any opinions?
