I don't really think it was deceptive...in fact, I agree with your comments. Since no one else had responded to you, I was just answering your question regarding what it was that was perceived as deceptive - that the ads were only being seen by a select group (namely, supposedly, the investors) and not being viewed by the wider population.

Personally, I think the execution of the internet campaign is just another example of piss poor management rather than deception.
