wbmw, thanks for the response. There was an interesting response also on the Intel board from alan81 which showed that Intel is already positioning current Itanium for Xeon market segments (although I do not see the value proposition). The Intel document is here -

http://www.intel.com/products/roadmap/index.htm

However, I am perplexed. What did you mean when you wrote (on the Intel board, post 8185):

Sgolds, Re: "I'm afraid there are some on this board who disagree with us, they think that Itanium will push down into Xeon territory (and high end desktops) by late next year."

Ridiculous. I haven't seen anyone suggest this.

I am trying to reconcile this with:

It's not a question of which specific processor core, but rather a question of infrastructure and economies. IPF already sells in 2P and 4P configurations, and in some cases, Xeon machines are being replaced with IPF. A more widespread ramp will require better price/performance, which is not only a step function based on processor releases, but also a continuous incline as the IPF ecosystem improves.

Are you saying that there is no way the Itanium infrastructure can be competitive with Xeon in 2004? If that is so then Opteron should have a very good year, indeed!
