Because IPF is still too small to be relevant over the next few years (by that, I mean a significant percentage of Intel's server market share). Intel's market is based on Xeon, and that's what they stand to lose in the short term. I'm not a big fan of the strawman that IPF is a solid product, so Xeon ought to do well against Opteron. That doesn't make sense to me.
