You can get a lot of things in hospitals if you ask for it. But you have to ask or demand since patient comfort rests securely at the bottom of many physician's priorities.

The more I listen to people with medical issues and the more I watch the discovery health channel the more convinced I get that physicians with a sadistic bent don't just exist in bad movies. There are amazing sedatives available these days that make patients totally unaware of the torture they're being put through but a lot of doctors choose not to use them or even offer.

Just watched a 5-year old boy having bone marrow sucked out of his hip bone after what was clearly a half hearted effort at minimizing his discomfort. Three people held him down including his parents who were visibly upset. The video stopped at a point where the poor guy appeared to pass out from screaming and pain. How's that justified in this day and age?
