For instance, if two kids each hold a gumball and kid #1 wants to buy kid #2's gumball for .05 and kid #2 says no, I want .06 for mine, one of two things can happen.
Kid #1 can hand kid #2 .06 and BUY his gumball or kid #2 can hand kid #1 his gumball and say ok, I'll SELL it for .05.
Sells are 99.99999% at the bid, buys are 99.99999% at the ask unless independently arranged though an MM for later settlement at a neutral price, otherwise prices must match.
When you go to the grocery store, you're BUYING groceries, they aren't selling them to you. It's all about who succumbs to the other.
