REVIEW: Backpacking Australia

from the ReelTime review blog:

I have been in the review business for a long, long while (nine days now) and during that time I have imparted much knowledge to my readers (you're welcome). But, quite often, I receive email from my loyal followers asking if I can focus my sage advice on a specific topic dear to their squishy hearts. So, in an attempt to be the wind beneath your collective wings, I have decided to share some of your desperately embarrassing communications:

Dear Stabby,

I feel like the walls of my cubicle are closing in on me. The hum of the florescent lights is deafening. My stapler has become the focal point of my life. I just don't know how much longer I can last in this partitioned jungle. I am desperate for advice, please, please tell me how you survive life behind a desk.

Jimmy Dreary

Haha! You make me laugh Jimmy. I am, of course, writing this response from the deck of my yacht, while I float in the crystal blue waters off the coast of Trinidad (maybe you don't understand the economics of the review business), but I think I can help you anyhow.

You see, I recently came across a documentary series called Backpacking Australia, and while I've only viewed two of the thirteen episodes, I can already tell that you NEED to watch this show. The series presents an eclectic group of travelers that have come to the open spaces of Australia in search of...well, I don't think they really know. But, I suppose that's the point. Now, some people definitely won't get it. They'll think it's boring, they won't connect with the nomadic globetrotters, but you Jimmy, I believe you've got that wanderlust. Am I right?

If you're looking for the scripted drama of The Real World or Survivor, then look elsewhere. But, if you want to ride shotgun as some interesting people navigate the bush, and more importantly, their lives, then this documentary is for you. Though the people and the production are laid back, don't let me undersell you; the series is awash in comedy, real drama, and beautiful imagery. How could it not be? It's about life.

It's an honest portrayal aimed at people with similar thoughts sprouting in their minds -- thoughts that maybe climbing the ladder in a nine to five world does not guarantee happiness and listening to talking heads is not a path to enlightenment.

So, Jimmy, take a look at Backpacking Australia. I think it will give you some things to contemplate. And just maybe it will provide the push you need to rise from the ashes of your cubicle a new man, ready to conquer the real world (that's a figure of speech Jimmy, please don't burn anything down).
