Do you think that a mother who kills her five children and then calls the police is acting rationally or in a normal state of mind?
There's a world of difference between her and the woman who with forethought and deception killed her two children in order to save her relationship with her boyfriend.
Post-partum psychosis is as much a mental illness as any. If one has no mental control over their actions how can you hold them responsible in the same way you hold someone responsible that has every measure of control at hand?
If found guilty, I suspect it will be by reason of insanity and she will be properly confined to an institution for the mentally ill. If, indeed, she suffered from post-partum psychosis she will eventually recover her sanity, and to me her "sentence" will be far harsher than any we could delve out.
She shall be sentenced to a lifetime of knowing that she murdered her own children.
That the National Organization of Women is involved is logical considering the case involves an illness particular only to women. It's rather curious that the conservatives would choose to see NOW's support as an alliance of baby-killers rather than as support for a Christian woman carrying out her Christian duty to not use birth control or have an abortion, but go forth and multiply without restraint. Maybe the conservatives just didn't like seeing the results of said doctrine on an unbalanced mind, or perhaps the doctrine, itself, helped unbalance the mind.
