Police Arrest 15 AC, ANPP Members In Ekiti

Adeolu Adeyemo, Ado-Ekiti - 21.04.2007

Few hours to the commencement of the presidential and National Assembly elections, the police in Ekiti State arrested 15 members of the Action Congress and the All Nigeria Peoples Party.

The AC and ANPP are the two major opposition political parties to the ruling party in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party.

Saturday Tribune investigations revealed that their arrest was carried out in Ikole Local Government Area of the state early on Friday.

Those arrested were still in police custody as at press time on Friday.

Speaking on the development, a top police officer, who preferred anonymity, disclosed that the arrested politicians were reported to have done some unpleasant things by some PDP.

He, however, did not state what the unpleasant things were. Among those arrested were the Chairman of AC in the local government, Chief Alaba Ajewole, Mr. Julius Fatunla, Mr. Francis Famoroti and a notable ANPP leader, Chief Akin Omotosho.

Commenting, the state Chairman of the AC, Mr. Jide Awe, condemned the arrest of his members without any offence, adding that the opposition parties would not allow themselves to be gagged by the PDP.

Awe alleged that the arrest was to cripple the effort of his party during the presidential and National Assembly election.

Awe on Friday petitioned the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, Mr. Ibe Aghanya, on the arrest.
