IMO,

1. If you bought the stolen/fake(whatever) goods without knowing and keep it - innocent

2. If you bought the stolen/fake(whatever) goods without knowing and sold it to somebody else, and resulted in some profit - guilty

so, if you never sold the shares to market, just write that fact in your letter.
