Now, I don't know a damn thing about it, but I wouldn't think that huge volumes would make it any easier to get better yields, whereas lots of time should.

Both. What I've seen is that Process tools get cranky when they sit idle, so continuously running is the best way to go, Yield wise. Time is more important, because you have a larger Processed Product Wafer Database to use to optimize the tools. I would expect subsequent Products on an identicle Process to yield better, and sooner then their product predecessors.
