cliff, I agree with everything you said except the part about VMC stocks going up in a real bear market. I lived through the 1970's bear market and I got killed buying VMC stocks. I had a company that made over $1.00 per share earnings and it went from $15 down to $2 in a matter of one year with no change in earnings. I sold it for $2 because my wife wanted to buy new furniture. The stock was Wards Company in Richmond Va. They eventually changed their name to Circuit City Stores and during the bull market in the 80's and 90's had about 7 or 8 2 for 1 splits and my few shares that I sold at $2 eventually became worth 1/2 mil. But it wasn't until the bear was over that it took off. In 1972, I had a whole list of VMC stocks with PE's of 2 and 3.They would drop a few cents every day. I got so sick of it that I sold everything and didn't buy any stocks between 1972 and 1980.
