This is probably true for ATI, given their earnings. nVidia, for example managed to get 44% gross margins in their most recent quarter.

I suspect ATI and Nvidia swing between profitability and loss
based on having the hot hand in the high price, high margin
gaming add-in market, i.e. a very narrow portion of the overall
discrete graphics market by units.

BTW, how much revenue does Nvidia get from selling enthusiast
after market cards under their own name? That would have a
disproportionate effect on revenue and margins compared to
bare, high volume GPUs.
