There's an old saying that you can't buy a game in golf. But plenty of big spenders certainly try. If money is no concern, here is a set of clubs (custom-made, of course) that will put a real dent in your wallet, if not your scorecard. Grand total: $5,960.

1. DRIVER
Adams Golf Insight BUL. $700. As with most clubs, the shaft is the most important component. This driver was built with a Diamana White Board shaft. It is one of the best in the game. But it comes at a cost far higher than the 300-$400 you would pay for a top-line driver at a pro shop.

2. IRON
Miura. 3-iron through P-wedge. $2,300. You could buy a great set of irons for $800-$1,000, but Miura irons are in a different class. The heads are triple-forged (double is normal) for ultimate precision. They are built with the Element 21 shaft made from metal found only in Russia. The shaft's lively tip adds distance and has terrific shock absorption.

3. FAIRWAY WOOD
Bobby Jones 3-wood. $560. Noted golf designer Jesse Ortiz strikes again with a club resembling the old Ginty. Custom club-fitter Dennis Piant says it's easy to hit off the fairway, as the sole slides neatly through grass. With a Diamana Red Board shaft, it's much costlier than the $100-$200 you'd pay for a fairway wood off the shelf.

4. WEDGE
Zodia. $450. Good quality wedges go for $100-$120. Then there's the Zodia. They are hand-ground to tour standards by a top Japanese artisan. The Nippon shaft, which has a special smoked finish, is available at only 25 pro shops in the U.S. The head-shaft combo provides nonpareil control. Of course, you'll need two, both a lob and a sand wedge.

5. PUTTER
Bettinardi Golf. $1,500. You could tap a few putts on the fake green at your pro shop and buy a good putter for $100-$200. Or you can go to Bob Bettinardi's studio in Tinley Park and get the attention he lavishes on the pros who use his putters. This one has Bettinardi's signature one-piece technology and honeycomb face."
