Thanks for the responses, guys. The air conditioner tends to run fine during the day for around 1/2 an hour then trips at which point I have to flip the switch. At night it will tend to work for hours without tripping and possibly the entire night.

Nope, don't have aluminum house wiring.

Most importantly, I am completely clueless when it comes to home repair on any level. I'm not even sure which end of a hammer I am supposed to be holding. Should I be calling an air conditioner repair or an electrician? Any chain-types you guys recommend or should I go with an independent? How do I know if the dude is trying to rip me off or not?
