Yes, even though Opteron has some contention issues a 8P, it is not nearly the contention problem that Xeon shows for that massively shared memory.

How do you know this when there are no 8-way benchmarks for Opteron?

In TPC-C there is only 1 4-way Opteron result which is 82226 compared to a 4-way Xeon at 90271.

It would appear that Xeon wins based on what benchmarks are available. I'm sure Opteron will do better at some point but so will Xeon. You have to wonder why no one wants to post Opteron results running database or transaction benchmarks.
