That is quickly changing. Else DeBeers wouldn't be fighting it. DeBeers latest way to combat synthetic diamonds is to engrave their diamonds with a microscopic "DB." This is how their diamonds can be distinguished from synthetics. DeBeers spent a lot of money trying to create a machine to "tell" the difference. Their conclusion was that the synthetic diamonds are chemically and molecularly diamonds. So as of now, the only way is to mark the "natural" diamonds in some way.
