Part 4: Texas Oil History

Kilgore Wildcatter’s: This is where it all started. Kilgore is a little city in East Texas. The population was 11,301 at the 2000 census, located mostly in Gregg County.

I've put this together to give you an idea of the Oil Rich History of the region. This helps to explain how the region got branded as Oil Country. Kilgore is east of Dallas from Interstate I-35.

This is a different drilling region from Giddings but some fun stuff to read about. This is an area which creates a triangle in my mind. Kilgore, Longview and Athens. Athen's has been mostly drilled out, but the Kilgore and Longview areas are still active with both oil and gas production. Now, Athens is know for its black eyed pea production. (I'm not suggesting you buy black eyed peas on the futures market!)

Clarification:
I said Alpine the other day but was thinking Athen's in my mind. Alpine has some interesting history as well but it's not located in the same oil rich fields. I do not want to mislead anyone so please forgive my mistake.

History:
October 3, 1930 marked the beginning of the East Texas Oil Boom when "Dad" Joiner unknowingly tapped into the world's largest pocket of oil in a Rusk County pasture. In the 1940's, over 1,000 wooden oil derricks lined the streets of Kilgore. One section of the Kilgore oil field was named "The World's Richest Acre" The oil boom brought thousands of drillers and producers into East Texas.

Article - The East Texas Oil Museum:
Once 1200 oil wells were producing inside the city limits of Kilgore, Texas. That oil legacy is preserved in the East Texas Oil Museum.

That's it unless I wanted to research the rich oil fields in Oklahoma which is located towards the northeast from Kilgore and Longview.
