If you have a phone that can only be used to make calls, you're wasting space in your pocket. At least, that's what the latest slew of cellphone/PDA/MP3 players are saying. With the arrival of the Samsung Uproar and the Kyocera smartphone, cellphones are becoming more than just portable calling devices.

Nokia seems to have avoided this convergence confusion for a while. However, with the release of the Music Player HDR-1, Nokia has turned its phones into music players as well.

The Nokia Music Player is compatible with most of Nokia's phone lines, including the 3310, 3330, 8210 and 8850 series. It can be used as an FM tuner, a digital audio player, and a handsfree phone-dialing kit. The handsfree kit recognizes voice commands to dial numbers not on the calling list.

The player has 32 MB of RAM to store AAC and MP3 music files. It transfers music via USB. Running only on a single AAA battery, the HDR-1 can be used as a standalone player as well.

The player should be available during the third quarter of 2001.

Trend.
