Theft can be a huge problem in Gold mining ... but the thieves don't target raw ore ... expect for hobbyist hand panners that claim jump for a 1/2 gram a day hand panning.

Pro thieves wait until the miner has expended the money/energy to produce/create to a high grade concentrate that has value ... or they steal expensive equipment that is easy to move

basically ... the only type of raw ore worth stealing would be like the type of gravel coming off the bedrock on places like Williams Creek or Lightning Creek in BC in the 1800's ... modern raw ore has little practical/economic value until it's been highly concentrated - which is an expensive process.
