UND, Re: Intel may be free to use AMD64, but who in the company would want to champion the cause? You'd look like a traitor. Company politics does matter here. It would take someone at the very top to turn the ship around. I imagine that 99% of the employees at Intel, as at any other big company, are too busy protecting their own backsides to do something like that. It's very, very hard to put your neck that close to the chopping block -- especially so with Intel's reputed corporate culture.

Intel's corporate culture is "only the paranoid survive". That's not consistent with your vision.
