I live in NY also. Compared to homes in the south, where taxes are low, they look better, the roads are better, the schools are better, and everything is better. You get what you pay for. Then, when you retire, you can sell it, get a bag a money, and go somewhere the real estate is cheaper, and live well. Also, if you work for a public employer in NY, you will get a nice pension when you retire. I didn't save any money for retirement because I knew I'd have a pension, full medical care, and not have to pay state income tax. Pretty good if you ask me. I also get a property tax rebate since my inome is less than $85K.
