While social media is a worldwide phenomenon, I suggest it may be the most pervasive in the USA.
People who would otherwise be relatively happy with their lives see the (often manufactured) grandiosity of the lives of people on social media and come to the conclusion that they are losers in life because they haven't achieved the same level of wealth and success.
I believe there have been studies that have concluded that the increase in depression and suicide amongst teens can largely be traced to social media. Because of the aforementioned issues but also because kids are so easily bullied when on-line.
I am very glad that social media was not a thing when I was a youngster.
