1777 Congress Adopts the Stars and Stripes

On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution establishing an official flag for the new nation: "Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation." This decision marked the birth of the Stars and Stripes, a symbol of freedom and unity that would grow to represent the United States of America around the world. Today, June 14th is celebrated as Flag Day in the United States, honoring this pivotal moment in the nation’s history.
