I think you may have been incorrect.
Forcing your broker to put your shares in cert form, if any broker even does that any more, does indeed remove them from the market no matter which why your logic twists it. No one but yourself knows you own shares.
Your broker will not have your shares available to trade in any form in a normal market. His contention is solid. Yours is defensive nitpicking.
