I think the best course I took in high school was called 'Faith and Morality'. I was a senior and I was in a Catholic school, had enough credits to graduate early but it was a required course and the teacher was really cool. He taught us a ton about normal life expanding it from the bible.

How we came to exist, how we feel, who we love and why we cherish certain things above others. All in there, his interpretation of course but it really hit home for me..

Our faith is what exists in our dreams, that there is some higher power guiding us to everlasting life that is not achievable without our morality that teaches us to always be humble. To help the disenfranchised, the sick, the poor, the hungry, the confused, the dreamers like ourselves and even terrible people who only bring fear and anger into their own lives.

As I grow older and have discarded religion, I will always remember that class and that teacher who was about the only one I paid attention to when I was 18 and should have been gone from that place already. I hated that school but he always brought a little light into my day discussing "faith and morality". He pulled no punches and was straight up with us. He knew I was a knucklehead but he talked to me like I was his best friend.

Religion has gone to to the dogs since then. It's horrible what has become of it.
