1. Yes, it did rain almost all the time. I don't think that's typical of Japanese weather. I suppose it was an artistic choice.
3. Chopsticks are fine. You just have to practice using them. And probably the folks running the show didn't want people to come to dinner with stabby forks and sharp knives. We did learn that the Japanese of that time were inordinately fond of their swords and stuff. Awkward if they brought them to dinner.
4. I really was surprised that they didn't really seem to have much in the way of furniture. Even beds were just sheets spread on the floor. Without pillows to pillow on. Life must have been uncomfortable.
