On a totally unrelated but related note. I've read all your links and stories for sure.
But my input is about who controls these images of shithead? This one already on file Mario Tama//Getty Images and can't get a creation date.
But it is fairly heavily touched up. Magazines have their own digital image departments who routinely 'cosmetically' clean up people, but not allegedly alter people. It's impossible for his hair to go totally smooth and unfocused within the same depth of field his nose and ear is in. Amongst some blemishes removed. Tough on his shit skin. I also think someone thinned out his face on his right side away from the camera. They filled in the shadow more perhaps to thin his face.

But I'm not sure any more at what point it gets done? Instructed by the campaign media people? Esquire? Sometime between the actual creation in camera date and now, his photos are almost all manipulated. And todays digital cameras have software that globally removes 'blemishes' decently in camera processing. But they can't do sections. They don't pick and choose and only have algorithms for pixels.
