This Earth Day, Let’s Secure America’s Mineral Future

America is learning the hard way that cheaper is not always better. While domestic extraction and processing of critical minerals in the U.S. may come at a higher price point than simply sourcing them from China, the tradeoffs in terms of environmental protection and national security make this a worthwhile investment. As we've seen, Beijing can leverage its dominance of the global supply chain as a geopolitical weapon. Paying a modest premium to develop a secure, sustainable minerals sector here at home is a small price to pay to insulate the U.S. from these grave risks. In the long run, the economic benefits of an onshore critical minerals industry – from manufacturing jobs to reduced supply chain vulnerabilities – will outweigh the short-term premium. Investing in a domestic mining renaissance is a prudent insurance policy for America's economic and environmental future.
