Opponents of the companies know that there is a wide audience for articles critical of them, that is generally (and often completely) uninformed and thus receptive to almost anything negative that is said about them. And the financial media virtually never rebut or refute misinformation printed about Fannie and Freddie, so there is no corrective mechanism in place to prevent misstatements or outright falsehoods about the companies from perpetuating. It has been that way since the conservatorships, when Fannie and Freddie were “discouraged” from speaking out on their own behalf."
