Assuming U.S. jurisdiction. Doing this is called shorting against the box. Shorting against the box in today’s age will trigger a capital gain against the long position. Meaning, there is no free lunch of de facto locking in gains without taking on risk. If what you describe as a trend following technique, why not wait for the trend in either direction prior to putting on a position?
