He and his brother used the YMCA gig to cut costs - they lived in their dumpy office as they were too broke to pay rent to have an apartment. Every cent got plowed back into their business.

Even after Amazon "went public" and Bezos was a literal billionaire on paper due to his stock holdings - the dude lived like a pauper knowing that in an INSTANT they could be wiped like in the dot.com crash. He never sold a share or lived large until really fairly recently - THAT is how it's done.
