Something in today’s PR reminds me of one of Kim’s patents that’s pending:

Today:
“This project used a new strain of Pseudomonas bacteria capable of converting depolymerized polyethylene into targeted recombinant proteins…While this approach using bacteria doesn’t directly create silk fibers, the potential impact of creating technologies to address the growing plastic waste and convert that into useful and biodegradable materials is very exciting.”

From the patent pending:
“Synthesis of Non-Native Proteins in Bombyx Mori by Modifying Sericin Expression”, moves beyond the heavy chain fibroin and creates opportunities for CO-PRODUCTION of non-fibrous proteins within sericin. Sericin is the stick glue-like protein holding the silk fibers together, making up roughly 20% of the cocoon, and is broadly considered a waste product. “
