I thought NY was really cool. I was in China working for a time earlier and got used to the madness but NYC is just as crazy as I was and a lot more friendly.

Once I figured out the subway it seemed like the whole world was at my fingertips. I did have issues with the way they throw out garbage and to me the whole place stunk but I still liked it a lot.

I was in manhattan though, so I can't speak for the suburbs.
