Malcolm Fraser, the transgenics expert from the University of Notre Dame, said he encoded chimeric silkworm/spider proteins using piggybac vectors. The resulting fibers were tougher than silkworm silk fibres and as tough as native dragline spider silk fibres.

And that was clear back over a decade ago. Now the results exceed native dragline silk. And they’ve just produced a 25kg batch of recombinant spider silk and had it processed into finished reeled raw silk! They’re doing limited production of that right now, and have just announced they have an even better silk just beginning trials!!!
