Why does it have to be gmail?

Don't know if they would be able even if you could get them on the phone...
If you have Google One subscription, you can probably get an English speaker on the phone within 2-3 minutes. Otherwise I guess you'll have to use email/chat. (At least I think you need a subscription for it...)
The Gmail recovery is usually a breeze, but it does require you to have setup a phone number and/or backup email for the process to work.
