Special Masters are typically called upon by a judge to expedite things that may be in disagreement. A Special Master can help to decide upon matters of fact, determine what materials are privileged/confidential and to narrow or broaden the scope of discovery. A Special Master can also serve as an enforcer of sorts to make sure the presiding judge's orders are followed by both parties. Lastly, a Special Master can also be called upon to provide the presiding judge with recommendations in a quick and expedient manner.
