"In regards to your inquiry, if the company is undergoing some type of Corporate Action, the system will hard stop you from either buying or selling the position. This could be due to a reverse split, a merger, acquisition etc. This is a security feature for not only the customer, but for E*TRADE as well.
We have had instances in the past where clients placed orders to sell positions where the company had just announced a Reverse Split. They sold more shares then they actually had in their account.
