1GW Danish green hydrogen project granted environmental approval
By Charlie Currie on Jan 16, 2024

A 1GW green hydrogen production facility planned for Esbjerg, Denmark, has received environmental approval, bringing the H2 Energy Europe project closer to final investment decision (FID).
The facility plans to utilise 1GW of Plug Power PEM electrolysers, powered by offshore wind, to produce up to 100,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year from 2028.

Hydrogen produced at the Esbjerg site is intended for use in the energy and transportations sector in northern Europe, as well as a chemical feedstock for e-fuel production.
Furthermore, excess heat produced from the site is hoped to potentially supply “the majority” of households in Esbjerg with district heating.

Mark Pedersen, Operations Manager at H2 Energy Europe, also said the company will look to utilise wastewater for splitting via electrolysis to “reduce the strain” on drinking water and groundwater resources.
“This innovative approach is expected to absorb more than one million cubic metres of water annually for electrolysis,” he said.

Esbjerg Municipality Mayor, Jesper Frost Rasmussen, said the project will play a role in attracting additional Power-to-X companies to the region.
However, the Mayor warned, “There remains a need for clarity regarding the placement of a pipeline and its expected establishment, which are critical for the realisation of a robust hydrogen industry in Denmark.”
Supporting the environmental approval, Troels Ranis, Vice-President of the Confederation of Danish Industry and Director of DI Energy, said, “2023 presented many obstacles, but we have full faith in the Danish private and public decision makers fulfilling the potential of the hydrogen industry.

“2024 is a crucial year for the Danish hydrogen industry, and to start it off with a great step for one of the largest projects is a strong signal to the entire ecosystem.”
H2 Energy Europe was established as a joint venture between Trafigura and H2 Energy. In 2023, Trafigura became the majority owner of the company.

In December (2023), H2 Energy Europe was awarded UK Government funding for its planned 20MW hydrogen production facility at the port of Milford Haven in South Wales.
