Because banks know these margin calls can cause a systemic disturbance that could set off a short squeeze that could bring down the markets in a big way. Rather then impact the whole market, they elect to let the Naked Shorting HF, MMs, Brokers slide and hang in there. While they squeeze down the AMC share price for either a RS or bankruptcy. Both of which would wipeout the shareholders and close the naked short positions bailing their asses out of bankruptcy or even worst legal litigation that could send the HF, MMs, BDs CEOs into prison. IMHO.
