The spread gets wide like that because market makers don't want to chase the stock up. If they wanted to chase the stock up, they would raise the bid. When the spread widens sellers freak out and will either lower the ask or hit the bid. In the end the market makers (or investors) collect shares.
I was told this is going to be much larger than I anticipated.
