"A scandalous development" environmentalists concerned about the changes in the law on protected areas
that Arbjona Çibuku -December 15, 20230

Protected areas are being threatened by legal changes that pave the way for investments and industrial activity.

On Wednesday, the Committee for Production Activities, Trade and Environmentstarted the reviewof the proposal submitted by 12 deputies of the Socialist Party.

So far, 5 organizations and 1 individual have expressed their objections to the draft law, on the online public consultation platform. They have called the law a "scandalous development" that violates nature.

Attempts to intervene in the protected areas have started before this proposal.

The much-debated Law on Strategic Investments, one of its problematic elements is precisely the intervention in protected areas. In the last 2 years that this law has been postponed, 5 projects have been approved within the territory of Protected Areas or near Natural Monuments.

The government has openly supported this proposal of the deputies. It was Prime Minister Edi Rama who, during an activity for Vjosa, said that "The moral considerations of how we should behave with nature cannot be accepted by our government".
