I think gulilooney is getting what he deserves for the last 5 years of his misguided lost life.
But was pondering how he got here. guili wasn't a fully there mayor. Nothing remarkable until 911. Still he wasn't remarkable then, but he did do most all the right things and said the right words.
But there's an interesting development in people when an extra ordinary effect consumes all time and space like the 911 attack. guili went from semi bored to full on operating inultra high gear for hours on end, days/weeks even. All the adrenaline, all that none stop action and decisions and pressure. Some people thrive on it, specially if they've been through something like it. And then there's the instant fame on a world stage and it's intoxicating. guili was on a level he's never been before... and then.. and then.. in a month there is almost nothing. No more rushing to interviews, no snap decisions, no adrenaline coursing through the veins...
Just hard work and incredibly sad constant meetings... it's a physical, chemical and mental let down. And some people don't want it to end and start doing weird things.
I knew the volunteer fireman as an acquaintance of a friend who found that baby girl after the horrific plane crash on i-94 at the michigan metro airport years ago. He was on the world media circuit for months. He worked at a motel on the airstrip where my buddy was working the bar and that's how I got to know him a bit. We were talking one night and he said for some reason he's depressed and feels like everything is in black and white instead of color since everything calmed down.
If I'm remembering right I think he committed suicide. It's like the up and down is just too hard to take. So maybe guiliani just never got his mojo back and wanted more of that drug of fame.
