Lovelle's uncle was the drummer Arthur Herbert. Lovelle began his career with the trumpeter, singer, and band leader Hot Lips Page in the late 1940s, then played in the 1950s with the saxophonist Hal Singer, Johnny Moore's Three Blazers and the pianist Earl Hines.[1] Through working for Lucky Thompson and Jimmy Rushing of Count Basie's Orchestra, he became house drummer at the Savoy Ballroom in New York City for much of the 1950s.[1]

That fifties 'Savoy' period in NYC must have been his 'heyday' as he was in his thirties then, it appears.
Playing with big bands has to be a real treat for any drummer afforded the opportunity.
Riffing off such high energy from so many sources in the entourage of players had to be a blast.

It's something I never got to do, but definitely wanted to.
Closest I got was waiting to sit in at a Musician's Union hall jam, but I didn't get to play.
