Hundreds of students were out ill on Thursday
A “major” outbreak of the flu has forced a Dayton-area high school to close, according to local news reports.
Fairborn High School, in southeast Ohio, was closed on Friday. It comes after nearly a third of the school’s 1,000 students were absent on Thursday, according to the school district’s superintendent. The district wrote on its Facebook page that all extracurricular activities would also be halted for the weekend. This includes a band concert scheduled for the weekend.
Lolli said that the school will be sanitizing surfaces, and recommended that students recover over the three day weekend.
“This is very unusual. It’s the first time for me in my career as an administrator to deal with something like this,” Lolli continued.
Flu season is in full force across the country. Usually, it accelerates in December and January, but this year it began in full in November. As of November 28th, hospitalizations from the flu had increased by 21%, and hospitalizations from COVID-19 and RSV are trending upwards as well, with available hospital beds starting to dwindle in supply. At least one school in Alabama has also been forced to close because of the flu this year as well.
