Just like ANY currency (or religion), value exists within the minds of people. The only thing gold and silver have going for them is tradition (and perhaps nostalgia). Otherwise, there's nothing intrinsic to human survival or practical utility within those two metals. One can argue copper and iron are more valuable for utilitarian reasons.
