If the stock was done for good, the short positions would have closed. They haven't, though. If there is only one thing you could do for me, it's educate me on how this could be?

You do have to close, btw. Otherwise, you will always have a risk out there. Sure, you could utilize the gains. However, until the position is closed, you are still on the hook. Imagine if this does take off and emerge from the grave 😳
