I think it's supposed to be the other way round. And in fact in a merger or acquisition, the shares of one of the parties usually are cancelled. Though some acquired companies do continue to trade as entities separate from the parent.

But that has no application here. The BBBYQ assets that had some value were sold, mostly to Overstock. And its stock was cancelled.
