SHUT IT DOWN
Since 1990, there have been six partial or
full federal government shutdowns in the
US. While the length and depth of these
shutdowns varied, their impact on the
stock market has been negligible. From the
month before each shutdown started to one
month after it ended, the S&P 500’s median
performance in these six periods was a gain of
5.5% with positive returns five times.
