I actually think it's much deeper and much sadder than that. These people are experiencing something very similar to what's called "Battered Wife Syndrome". It's a mental issue that appears in women who are in abusive relationships. The more they are abused, the more they violently defend the abuser. You can have a hundred people all telling them that they are wrong and seriously hurting themselves and their conviction and devotion to the lie inside their head only gets stronger.
